Sara's Birthday and a Visit from Jimmy Carter
Our last day on the SAM Shortline was also Sara's birthday. And so we started the day with all the volunteers on the train singing "Happy Birthday" to Sara. Then later in the day, all the passengers were told it was Sara's birthday, so the entire train sang "Happy Birthday." The Baptist choir in our car sang the best, the young students on a 5th grade school trip sang with the most enthusiasm, and the spirit of all the volunteers and all the other passengers carried the day!
On the train with us were also a large group of families from the Warner Robbins Air Force. All of these families had loved ones serving in Iraq, and we wanted to make it a very special day for them. And so in honor of these families (and because it was Sara's birthday), Georgia state troopers were out in front of the depot when we loaded the train, yellow ribbones were tied on all the fences between the depot and the train, and a special visit by Jimmy Carter was arranged for when the train stopped in Plains.

Needless to say, everyone was excited! Jimmy Carter slowly walked around and among all the families, allowed photo opportunities, and wished us well. We didn't get him to sing "Happy Birthday" to Sara, but maybe she had heard that enough that day.
