Bruce and Sara---as Park Guides
at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island NM
May 24, 2010 to October 16, 2010

2010

On Monday, May 24, 2010, Bruce and Sara switched from being winter volunteers at Ellis Island to being full-time seasonal Park Guides at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, e.g. they started working again for the National Park Service as seasonal employees! Sara worked at the Statue of Liberty, and Bruce at Ellis Island.

With between 12,000 and 20,000 visitors a day during many summer months, the experience was very different from their other seasons. A lot more people, a lot more opportunities to make connections with people from all over the world, and many, many wonderful experiences!

Being able to work from home also was good. 2010 was Bruce's 40th reunion at Princeton and he's always been involved in his reunion committee; Sara's Mom was 92 years old and it was good being closer to home; our lakehouse needed some repair after being away for so many summers; and, of course, it was wonderful being able to spend more time with Rebecca and Brian, who live near us.

And so it was another great summer, a busy summer, and a summer we won't forget!

A Final Evaluation

At the end of each and every season, Bruce has written an evaluation and offered some recommendations for the Chief of Interpretation and the Superintendent. These have been written in the hope that they can help .....and that they can offer some new suggestions on how to improve visitor services. In the spirit of openness and transparency, here's what we wrote in 2010: 2010 Suggestions and Recommendations for The Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island National Monument
